How to get to La Fortuna

There are a few different ways to get to La Fortuna, one of them is on a public bus, depending on the location, and you can get buses every hour, and sometimes have to wait a little more. You also have an option easier and faster with a higher cost, which is the shuttle, as well as also for privacy, you can hire a private transport.

Private Transfers & Transportation around Costa Rica

The fleet of vehicles used, are usually a minivan or a Coaster, depending of the people that are traveling. They are subject to availability and must be booked in advance.

Other ways to Travel

Public buses

One of the most economical ways to travel in Costa Rica, is in the public bus. Because of the transport system in our country, sometimes you have to make a transfer bus, and another occasions, just enough to take a direct bus to get where you want.

Heredia to San José

Departure every day, each 10 minutes from the Heredia Terminal, from 5:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and at night from 12:15 pm to 4:00 a.m., each 30 minutes.

Cartago to San Jose

Departure every day, each 10 minutes from Cartago Terminal, from 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the ride takes 45 minutes, there is a distance of 22km.

Alajuela (airport) to San Jose

Departure every days, each 5 min, the bus stop it’s outside of the airport.

Limón – San Jose

If you are in the Caribbean, and you want to go to the Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna, San Carlos, the first you need to do, it’s to take a direct bus from Limon to San Jose, then make a bus transfer and take a new from San Jose to La Fortuna.

Buses from Limon to San Jose, leaves every day of the year, in hours from 4:30 am to 7:00 pm. From 4:30 am until 8:30 am, buses depart every half hour and from 8:30 am to 7:00 pm depart every hour.

There is a distance of 96 miles between the two places, and it takes like 2:30 hours.

The Limon bus terminal, it´s located in Limon Downtown, next to Palí Supermarket, and the ticket bus will cost $6.

Jacó – San Jose

To get from San Jose to Fortuna as in most cases, first you need to go to San Jose city, once in there, you have to make a transfer bus, and take one that is directed towards Fortuna.

The bus station in Jacó is located in Jacó Square Mall, there you have to buy a ticket which costs $4,5.

The bus schedule is at 05:00 am, 6:00 a.m., 7:00 a.m. 9:00 am, 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm, and the last one at 5:00 pm.

The distance between the two places is 100 km and the bus takes about 2 hours to get to San José, and it arrives at the Coca Cola Market bus station.

San Jose – La Fortuna

Three direct buses depart daily from San Jose to La Fortuna, it takes 4hr of trip, leaving the Atlántico Norte bus terminal at 6:15 am, 8:40am and 11:30 am; two daily services make the return run (12:45 m.d. & 2:45 pm ) Alternatively take a bus from San Jose to San Carlos (hourly; 2 hr. 30 min), where there are frequent connections to La Fortuna (every 1 – 2hr; 1hr- 1hr 30 min ). There are also daily buses from San Ramon (4 daily; 2 hr. 30 min).

Nicaragua Border (Peñas Blancas) – La Fortuna

The best way to be transported from the border of Peñas Blancas toward La Fortuna, San Carlos, one time you has crossed the border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica, will take one of the buses that are parked on the other side of the border has already in Costa Rican land, the schedule of the units are 10:00 am 11:30 am and 1:30 pm with destination to San Jose, Costa Rica your first stop will be in Liberia City, Guanacaste, then in Ciudad Quesada where you will have to make trans-shipment for bus to La Fortuna de San Carlos, once you are in Ciudad Quesada, you can take a bus to La Fortuna, the buses departure every hour, starting at 5:00 am, and the last one is at 10:00 pm The approx. time of travelling is 5 hours.

Liberia – La Fortuna

There are approximately 95 miles of distance, starting in Liberia and passing by Cañas, Tilarán, Nuevo Arenal and finally arriving to La Fortuna.

The first place where you should go is to Cañas, for that must go before to the Liberia bus station, and take a bus, which run from 5:00 am to 11:30 pm every hour, then go to Transportes Villana Bus Terminal, in Cañas downtown and take a bus to Tilarán, the buses departure every days each hour from 6:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Finally in Tilarán, go to the Bus

Station, and take a bus to La Fortuna, there are only 2 buses a day, one at 7:00 a.m., and the last one at 12:30 p.m.
